Governor's Mansion

 Special Candlelight Tour first weekend in December after the Jefferson City Christmas parade. Open to public. Free Admission.

Hours- Tuesdays and Thursdays. 10AM-12Noon and 1:00 PM-3-PM.  Free admission. Reservations required (call ahead at least 24 hours prior to visit.)  The mansion was built  in 1871. Old Missouri State Penitentiary Tour- 115 Lafayette Street.

Open April -  October   Adult Admission - $12.  Reservation required. Guided tour.  Prison was originally authorized in 1833 and its first prisoner confined in 1836, which was the same year as the siege of the Alamo.  The oldest surviving building dates to 1868 and was built by stones quarried on the site by inmate labor.  Inmates also built the limestone security walls  surrounding the prison complex. Tickets should be purchased from Jefferson City Convention  and Visitors Bureau.

Open year round.  Free Admission.   Call ahead to schedule a tour of the 100 year old, French Renaissance court building with massive marble staircase and a two story law library.

Cole County  Historical Museum - 109 Madison Street

Open Tues. - Sat.  1PM - 3PM. Guided Tour.  Adult admission: $3.  Student Admission (K-12th) : $1. 
Cole County 5th grade students-Free admission.                          
This is an elegant, Federal style row house built in 1871 as a personal residence for  Governor B Gratz Brown.  Museum exhibits Victorian furnishings, gowns worn by Missouri's First Ladies, and Civil War artifacts among other numerous historical items.

Carnahan Memorial Garden
 -  100 Madison Street

  Open year round.  Free admission.  Formerly called the Governor's Garden. Originated by Franklin  D Roosevelt as a WPA project during the late 1930's to create jobs during the Great Depression.  Money ran out and it remained unfinished until the late 1940's, when  Missouri's First Lady Juanita Donnelly took up the project. She worked side by side with Missouri State Penitentiary inmates to its completion. It has a beautiful central water feature and is a quiet, peaceful place with seasonal flowers, walkways, and seating. Jefferson Landing State Historic Site - 101 Jefferson Street 

  Comprised of the Lohman Building and Union Hotel


Open Tuesday -  Saturday.  10AM-4PM.  Free admission. Self-guided tour. The Lohman Building was built as a three storied  limestone structure (circa 1830's) as a center of river trade. Visitors may watch a film and tour the                  nineteenth century transportation exhibit on display.  Distance from Briar Rose- 7 Blocks

Law Enforcement Memorial

Open- year round. Free Admission.  This is a stately pavilion memorial which honors all  Missouri's law                            
enforcement officers. A special memorial of  engraved names  honors officers who have given their lives serving in the line of duty.  Dedicated in 1994.   Distance from Briar Rose - 9 Blocks

All Missouri Veterans Memorial
- Northeast corner of capitol grounds.

 Open year-round.  Free Admission.   Dedicated to  Missouri's veterans.  It is comprised of a limestone collonade  with terraced waterfall leading into a reflecting pool and eight black marble engraved monoliths commemorating veterans of war.  This is known as the Veteran's Walk.  Dedicated in 1991.  Distance from Briar Rose- 9 Blocks

Lewis and Clark Trail Monument 
 -  Northeast corner of Capitol grounds


Open year round.  Free admission.

The Monument is comprised of  several large bronze statues of the men on the expedition and their dog companion.  The statues are set atop Missouri  rock  formations and surrounded by Missouri flora and fauna . Great care has been taken to make the memorial an authentic representation of the time period.  *** Visitors will note there is no statue of Sacajawea.  She,  her baby, and  husband,  Charbonneau,  did  not join the expedition until April, 1805 from what is now known as North Dakota.

 This is a memorial to commemorate the proximity of  the  Lewis and Clark  camp site  as they traveled up the Missouri River on their famous journey in exploration of  the Louisiana Territory.  The exploration was commissioned by       President Thomas Jefferson,  for  whom the City of  Jefferson is named.  President Jefferson  purchased the entire Territory in 1803  from Napoleon for fifteen million dollars.  Lewis and Clark began their journey up the Missouri River in May,  1804.  After the Lewis and Clark expedition, 18 years later,  in 1821,  Missouri was carved from the Territory as a state. Central Dairy Ice Cream Parlor - 610 Madison Street

Open Monday - Saturday  Hours 10AM - 6 PM     Open Sunday - 1 PM - 5 PM.      

This is Jefferson City's legendary original  mom and pop ice cream parlor,  built in the mid 1930's  and has changed little since then.  It has served several generations and is still going strong. The ice cream is made in facilities located behind the parlor.  Lots of different flavors served in generous portions. Although the company recently sold to Prairie Farms, the parlor is still run by the original family.
